Create is at the top of blooms taxonomy, the point that teachers are hoping that their students will reach. Student growth in understanding can be compared to the parts of a flower as it grows.
When growing flowers or planting a garden one of the first things the gardener would do is to plant a seed. For learners these seeds are remembering, this is the stage when students can recall, define, and label diagrams. Here they are waiting for the right conditions to grow and bloom.
Once the seeds of remembering are watered, they begin to reach out the roots of understanding. Students can recall and summarize facts and stories as well as classify and sort information.
Once students have planted their roots in understanding, they can reach up the stems of application. They apply and use their knowledge to problems; they begin to experiment with the new information. This is the stage where students begin problem solving.
As the stems of application get stronger, it is possible to unfurl leaves of analysis. At the analysis, stage students are beginning to integrate information from one subject area across subjects and are organizing what they are learning in one area in relation to what they are learning in other areas.
Once the leaves have unfurled, buds begin to form. These are buds of evaluation; students are comparing information and examining it in depth. They are judging information to inform their own judgements.
Finally, the flower of creation blooms and all of the hard work and learning comes together. Students begin to invent and create new things that apply their knowledge. They are designing, planning and making.
