I realize that for many teachers bringing dance into the classroom can be frightening, as they have limited experience with it themselves. It would be possible to write whole books on how to teach dance and indeed there are programs that do just that. That is not my goal. I have listed a few resources that I use to inform and support my own practice when teaching dance, on my resources page. For those that are looking at brining dance into the classroom simply put the music on and dance, explore movement. There is no wrong way to dance; while some things may not be appropriate to school contexts, they are not inherently wrong. Dance is a form of creative expression that people have been using for thousands of years. It helps people to express things that they cannot with words. As I have written about above, dance helps students academically and has the wonderful side effect of giving them a chance to move.
My biggest piece of advice for anyone wanting to use dance in his or her classroom is to clear some space turn on the music and have fun. Anyone can dance.
