“The music is all around US, all you have to do is listen.” (Castle, Hart, & Castro, 2007)
Everyone has personal play list songs that pick them up and inspires them to go further, songs they listen to when they are sad and songs to celebrate life’s joys. I have mentioned many songs throughout this project and they are the ones that appeared on my playlist as I was writing this project. I wish I could play them for you however, that would take way to long, instead I have listed them for you to find and listen to on your own.
Music is highly creative and is not limited to the music classroom. Our music methods course has been covering a play first music methodology, as well as allowing us to create and explore with sound. We participated in a soundscape project that was highly creative and allowed those of us who were non-musical to create music successfully. This class has given us opportunity to create in an unstructured way with the soundscape project, and a structured way when we wrote our own blues songs. In our careers many of may be faced with the challenge of teaching music and may not feel prepared for it. I know that the creative, play first methodology has allowed me to feel comfortable with what I will one day teach. Part of the music curriculum for students at all levels is composing or creating their own music. We can use open-ended activities like soundscaping and similar ideas to work help our students explore music. We could also make music cross circular and have them write a song about a concept they are learning in any number of other disciplines.
