Creativity is a holistic endeavor, it engages more than the mind, it goes beyond to the soul. Holistic education also aligns with the first people’s principals of learning which states “Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential, and relational (focused on connectedness, on reciprocal relationships, and a sense of place)”. The great thing with this principal and all of the first people’s principals of learning is that they can apply to all students regardless of their background. We are not just teaching minds we are teaching people and we need to treat them as such. “Teaching content is only the tip of the ice berg of what we do for our students. We: Build character, Boost Self-confidence, Kill apathy, Ignite Creativity, Promote perseverance, and Foster empathy. We do so much MORE than what a test score could possibly reflect ... we change lives). When we work with the whole person, our students may surpass even our wildest dreams! Creativity is an innate part of human life we are born with it, part of holistic learning is drawing that out and bringing it to the foreground, letting our students express that part of them. Creativity often engages a person mentally, physically, spiritually and relationally. Each person will experience a holistic activity differently. I am reminded of the words of Dr. Ross Liard in his IDEA classes at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, after every activity that we did in his classes we were asked to reflect on two questions “what does this teach us about creativity ? The second question is what does it teach us about ourselves or humanity?” Simply being in the IDEA program, I was truly able to engage in holistic creative learning. The poem that begins the dance section is a piece of writing that I created during my time in the IDEA program, writing that was a holistic experience for me, as it took my first creative passion and one that is highly physical into a written piece of work. It was holistic because it took my movements and feelings and translated them to paper teaching me that I can create in more than one way and challenging me to use parts of my bring and thinking processes that I never had before. I learned a lot about working with the whole person in the IDEA program though it was never explicitly taught, I learned by observing the instructor and seeing how he engaged with each student to work with them and draw out the best in them. I learned that every student brings their own experiences and story to the classroom and that all stories are valid. Student’s stories become the lenses through which they experience the world. Holistic and creative learning create opportunities for learning to be both deep and transformative. It is not about the end goal but about the journey of getting there holistic learning focussed on the process and not the product. Holistic learning teaches not merely content knowledge it encourages intra-personal and interpersonal learning.
